The Threespot Cichlid (Cichlasoma trimaculatum) is a large, powerfully built fish native to the Pacific-slope river systems running from southern Mexico down through El Salvador. In the wild it gravitates toward slow-moving, lower-valley waters with muddy or sandy substrates, tucking into root tangles and aquatic vegetation where it hunts small fish, invertebrates, and insects. It's believed to be one of the founding species behind the Flowerhorn hybrid, though the natural fish has plenty of personality on its own without the intervention. In the aquarium, the Threespot lives up to its cichlid reputation. This is a territorial, assertive fish that rarely tolerates tankmates without friction. Keeping one alongside other large, robust cichlids is possible, but only with serious space and careful stocking. A single specimen or a bonded pair is the more reliable approach for most keepers. On the upside, breeding pairs are genuinely rewarding to watch: they select a flat surface, may deposit close to a thousand eggs, and both parents guard aggressively and tend the fry with real dedication. Because these are messy, active feeders, strong mechanical filtration is a must. Though the return flow should be spread out rather than directed as a concentrated current, since trimacs prefer calmer water conditions.
