Venus Star Club Coral (Clavularia venustella) is a colonial soft coral native to the Northwest Atlantic, where it forms spreading mats of individual polyps across hard substrates in relatively dim, calm water. Each polyp extends from a shared stolonic base, giving a well-established colony a lush, carpet-like appearance. The polyps themselves are slender and feathery when fully extended, retracting into small cylindrical tubes when disturbed. Unlike many reef corals that demand intense lighting and brisk flow, this species is genuinely at home under modest conditions. Making it one of the more forgiving soft corals for newer reef keepers to work with. It asks for gentle, indirect flow rather than a direct blast, and it tends to do poorly if blasted by a powerhead pointed straight at the colony. Given time and stable water chemistry, colonies spread steadily across rockwork and can fill in a lower or shaded section of a tank that might otherwise go unused. It is considered reef safe and generally co-exists peacefully alongside other inhabitants, though like most encrusting corals it can compete for space if neighbouring corals are placed too close.
