Pure Utaka (Copadichromis virginalis) is one of the more tractable members of the Utaka group, a loose assemblage of Malawian cichlids renowned for their open-water, plankton-hunting lifestyle. Endemic to Lake Malawi, this sand-dwelling species is found in large shoals, and that social nature carries directly into the aquarium. It does best kept as a group, ideally one male with three or more females to spread out the male's attentions. Males can be identified by a distinctive red stripe running the full length of the dorsal fin, a feature that separates them from the closely related Copadichromis ilesi. Females are silver and considerably plainer, as is typical for the genus. Many locality variants exist across the lake, and fish on the market are often sold under names like "Gold Nkanda" reflecting where they were collected. Worth paying attention to if you want to keep them true-to-form. As cichlids go, this species is genuinely peaceful, but tankmate selection still matters. Mbuna are far too boisterous for it, and other Copadichromis should be avoided entirely due to the real risk of hybridization. Aulonocara and gentle Haplochromines like Cyrtocara moorii make sensible companions. It's a maternal mouthbrooder that will spawn readily in a well-maintained community, and its calm disposition makes it a reasonable choice for hobbyists new to Malawi cichlids.
