A stream-dwelling cyprinid from the foothills and mountain rivers of India, Myanmar, and China, Crossocheilus burmanicus occupies the middle and lower water column in fast-moving, well-oxygenated currents. In the wild it grazes heavily on algae, and it brings that same appetite into the aquarium, making it a practical addition to tanks where algae management is a priority. In terms of identification, this species sits in a group that causes real headaches for hobbyists. Fish sold as 'Siamese algae eaters' or under the trade name 'SAE' often turn out to be several different Crossocheilus species mislabeled and sold interchangeably. One of the more reliable ways to distinguish this species from those commonly traded lookalikes is to look at the dark lateral stripe that runs along the body. In Crossocheilus burmanicus, that stripe stops at the base of the tail and does not carry through into the caudal fin, unlike in some of its relatives. Beyond that, genus members share a few consistent traits: eight branched dorsal fin rays, immobile rostral lobes, no dorsal spine, and upper and lower lips that aren't directly connected. It grows to a decent size and appreciates a spacious setup with good flow, but is otherwise considered manageable for beginner fishkeepers.
