The Cuban cichlid (Nandopsis tetracanthus) holds a unique place in the hobby as the sole cichlid native to Cuba, where locals know it as the biajaca. In the wild it occupies a surprisingly broad range of habitats, fast-moving rivers, calmer lakes, and even brackish river mouths, usually hanging around vegetation. That adaptability carries over into captivity to some degree, though this is not a fish you'd call easygoing. It's a confirmed carnivore that naturally picks off worms, small fish, shrimp, and aquatic insects, so a meaty diet is non-negotiable in the aquarium. Temperament-wise, expect a fish that is generally reclusive and goes about its own business until something sets it off. And that something is usually another cichlid. It will actively challenge any cichlid it perceives as a threat, so tankmate selection needs real thought. Interestingly, owners often report that these fish develop a degree of recognition toward the person who feeds them, which gives them a bit more personality than your average bruiser. With a potential lifespan pushing into the low teens, a Cuban cichlid is a long-term commitment. It rewards patient, experienced keepers who can provide space and appropriate company.
