A deep sand bed is really non-negotiable here. The species is ovoviviparous, meaning females give birth to live young rather than laying eggs, which is a point of fascination for serious keepers. Despite a beginner care rating, the sheer footprint this fish demands is the real hurdle. Adults can reach nearly two feet across and need an enormous, wide-format tank to move comfortably. The aquarium must prioritize floor space over height. Handle with caution at all times, as the tail spine is a real hazard. Given that wild populations appear restricted to a fairly narrow geographic range, responsible sourcing matters for anyone considering this ray.
