Desjardin's Sailfin Tang (Zebrasoma desjardinii) is one of the most dramatically proportioned fish in the saltwater hobby, with an enormous dorsal fin that, when fully extended, makes the fish appear nearly as tall as it is long. The body is covered in detailed pale vertical striping and speckling that shifts subtly as the fish grows, and the tail region carries distinctive ringed patterning that sets it apart from its Pacific cousin, the Pacific sailfin tang. In the wild this species ranges across the Indian Ocean from East Africa and the Red Sea east through to the Andaman Sea, where adults typically patrol lagoon edges and seaward reef faces, often in pairs. Juveniles are more secretive, tucking themselves among staghorn corals in sheltered lagoon areas before venturing out as they mature. In the aquarium this species is a committed herbivore and a constant grazer, so a diet rich in marine algae, nori, and vegetable-based prepared foods keeps it healthy and reduces aggression. Given its potential size, pushing past a foot in length for well-fed adults, this is a fish that genuinely needs a very large display to thrive. Care is intermediate; it is not the most delicate tang in the trade, but it does appreciate stable water quality and plenty of open swimming room.
