The discus stingray (Paratrygon aiereba) is one of the most distinctive freshwater rays in the hobby, named for its unusually round, disc-like body profile that sets it apart from the more elongated shape of most other river stingrays. In the wild, this species ranges widely across South American river systems, from the Amazon basin and its major tributaries to the Orinoco drainage, where it tends to favor shallow stretches and areas close to the riverbanks. It can reach a substantial size and weight in the wild, making the 250-gallon minimum tank requirement very much a real consideration rather than a conservative guess. Diet consists of insects, crustaceans, and fish, so a varied carnivore menu is important in captivity. Reproduction is notably slow. Females produce only around two pups per pregnancy, which partly explains why wild populations deserve careful attention. Like all stingrays, this species carries a venomous tail spine, so handling requires real caution and respect. Despite being listed at a beginner care level, the sheer tank size and feeding demands mean this ray is best suited to keepers who have the space, budget, and commitment to do it justice. A genuinely impressive animal for a large, well-maintained freshwater setup.
