The Many Barred Distichodus (Distichodus fasciolatus) is a large, distinctive fish from the Congo River basin, where it ranges widely from the lower river all the way up to the upper Lualaba. In the wild it gravitates toward the bottom of big rivers, lakes, and their dead-end side channels, often over silty substrate. Its common name tells you exactly what to expect: a fish patterned with numerous bold vertical bars that remain visible even as it grows into a substantial adult. And it does grow. This is not a species you can tuck into a modest tank and forget about. Despite its size, it has a genuinely peaceful disposition toward tankmates, which makes it a lot more manageable than many large African riverfish. In the wild, adults feed heavily on aquatic vegetation, leaves, seeds, and insect larvae, so expect some plant munching in the aquarium. A well-planted setup is probably not the right home for this fish. Juveniles start life near flooded riverbanks, picking through zooplankton and insect larvae before graduating to a more plant-heavy adult diet. Given its size potential and dietary quirks, it suits intermediate keepers who can provide the space and the right tank conditions to let it thrive over its long lifespan.
