The Dusky Sailfin Tang (Zebrasoma xanthurum) is one of the more visually distinctive surgeonfish available to saltwater keepers, wearing a deep indigo-purple body set off by a bright yellow tail. A combination that stands out in any reef display. In the wild it ranges from the Red Sea down through the Persian Gulf and into the Maldives, where it grazes on filamentous algae across coral-rich reefs and rockier bottom habitats. Its small, densely packed pharyngeal teeth are well suited to that kind of scraping diet, and in captivity it should be offered plenty of algae-based foods alongside other vegetable matter to stay healthy. Behaviorally, this is a fish that rewards some planning before purchase. Juveniles can be relatively peaceful, but as adults they tend to become territorial and can harass new tankmates, particularly fish that share a similar body shape. Keeping it alongside other sailfin-type tangs is generally asking for trouble. A large, well-established system with plenty of open swimming room and defined territories helps take the edge off that aggression. With good conditions and a varied herbivore diet, these fish are reasonably hardy and can be a long-lived centerpiece for an experienced reef keeper willing to manage their tank dynamics carefully.
