The Dwarf Barb (Pethia phutunio) is a genuinely small fish, one of the more compact members of its genus, native to a broad swath of South Asia stretching from Pakistan through India, Bangladesh, and into Myanmar. In the wild it turns up in both clear-running streams and slower, silty standing waters, which hints at a fair degree of adaptability. Two bold black blotches on each flank, one just behind the gill cover and one on the caudal peduncle, are the most reliable field marks, along with a smaller dark spot at the front base of the dorsal fin and an occasional faint bar near the rear of the dorsal. The species is occasionally misidentified in the trade, partly because it is genuinely rare in the hobby and partly because several related Pethia share a similar pattern. Temperament is calm and somewhat timid, which is actually the main care consideration here. Because of its small size it can get lost or intimidated in a busy community tank, so it does far better with similarly scaled tankmates like small danios, Trigonostigma species, Microdevario, or dwarf shrimp. Keeping a group of eight or more is really the key to getting the best out of this fish. Males in a decent-sized school will show better color and spar gently for female attention, making for a lively and natural-looking display.
