A small stream-dwelling cyprinid from Borneo and Belitung Island, Eirmotus insignis is one of four members of a genus that went almost entirely unstudied for nearly half a century. In the wild it gravitates toward slow-moving or still water. Shaded backwaters, root-tangled shorelines, and swampy pockets where the bottom is soft mud or leaf litter and the water runs tea-dark and acidic. Its appearance is built around a series of dark vertical bars laid over a reddish to yellowish body, a pattern shared with close relatives and responsible for the informal trade name 'false eight-banded barb.' Distinguishing it from its lookalikes involves some careful fin-checking, as the differences come down to subtle details in dorsal-fin pigmentation and bar width. In the aquarium, this is a peaceful species that can be overshadowed or bullied by anything assertive, so tankmates should be chosen with care. Other small, gentle cyprinids like Trigonostigma or Boraras are solid picks. It's a genuine shoaler, and a group of eight or more individuals makes a real difference: the fish settle in, show better color, and the males put on some low-key but entertaining rivalry displays. A soft, dimly lit nano tank with leaf litter suits it beautifully, and it's approachable enough for newer keepers willing to keep the setup appropriately calm.
