The elephant-nose cichlid (Nimbochromis linni) is one of Lake Malawi's more specialized predators, built for ambush rather than open pursuit. Endemic to that great African rift lake, it moves between rocky shorelines and transitional habitat zones, blending a bold cichlid physique with the hunting patience you'd expect from a much smaller fish. The elongated snout that gives it its common name isn't just a cosmetic oddity. It plays into the fish's ability to root out and corner prey in tight spaces. In the wild, this species is strictly piscivorous, lying in wait and striking fast when smaller fish wander too close. In the aquarium that predatory instinct doesn't disappear, so tankmate selection needs real thought. Anything small enough to fit in its mouth is fair game, and even mid-sized companions can end up stressed or harassed. A spacious setup with plenty of rock structure suits it well, giving it the kind of environment it naturally patrols. This is an intermediate-level fish, less about fussy water chemistry and more about having the space, tank layout, and compatible company to keep it settled. Get those pieces right and it's a genuinely rewarding predator to work with.
