The flying barb (Esomus longimanus) is one of those quietly interesting fish that tends to get overlooked in favor of flashier tankmates, but it rewards a closer look. Native to slow-moving ditches, canals, ponds, and the broader channels of the Mekong drainage through Thailand and Cambodia, as well as coastal streams of the Malay Peninsula, this small cyprinid is built for life near the water surface. Its most distinctive physical traits are the enlarged pectoral fins and an exceptionally long pair of maxillary barbels that typically reach all the way back to the pectoral fin base. Once you notice them, there's no mistaking an Esomus. Coloration is modest, which is honestly why the genus gets so little shelf space at fish stores, but the body shape and those remarkable barbels give it a character all its own. In the wild it feeds on zooplankton and insects, and a varied diet including small live or frozen invertebrates suits it well in captivity. The species is considered accessible for newer keepers, though hobbyists have reported a wasting condition in Esomus species that causes rapid weight loss behind the gills and unfortunately has no known treatment. Worth keeping an eye on your fish regularly. Breeding in aquaria remains undocumented.
