The Striped Flying Barb (Esomus metallicus) is a slender, active fish from the slow waters and seasonally flooded landscapes of mainland Southeast Asia, including the Mekong, Salween, and Chao Phraya drainages down through the northern Malay Peninsula. In the wild it thrives in rice paddies, canals, and shallow swamps rather than open rivers, moving readily into newly inundated areas as the seasons shift. Its most immediately noticeable features are the oversized pectoral fins common to the genus and an exceptionally long pair of maxillary barbels that trail back past the pelvic-fin base. A dark lateral stripe runs the length of the body, intensifying toward the tail and ending cleanly at the caudal base, with no markings on the fins themselves. In the aquarium this species needs to be kept in groups of at least eight, since it develops a social hierarchy and smaller groups can result in weaker fish being persistently harassed. Reports on community compatibility are mixed. Fin-nipping behavior seems more likely when numbers are low or when slow-moving, long-finned tankmates are present. Keepers should also be aware of a reported wasting condition that can affect Esomus species, causing rapid weight loss behind the gills and carrying a poor prognosis. Overall this is a rewarding fish for someone prepared to meet its social needs and observe it carefully.
