The twig catfish (Farlowella vittata) is one of the more remarkable-looking fish you'll encounter in the freshwater hobby. Its entire body is elongated and rod-like, right down to a long, pointed rostrum, making it genuinely difficult to spot when it's resting motionless against driftwood or plant stems. Native to the Orinoco River basin in South America, this species inhabits slow or gentle waters where its camouflage gives it a real edge. In the aquarium it moves in short, deliberate hops between surfaces, occasionally swimming with full-body undulations when it needs to cross open water. It can even breach the surface with its snout when oxygen levels dip, a facultative air-breathing trick the genus is known for. Despite what the temperament tag might suggest, F. vittata is actually quite peaceful. Rival males can be mildly territorial, but interactions rarely cause harm. The real challenge is meeting its needs rather than managing aggression. It demands stable, pristine water in a well-established tank with plenty of biofilm, algae, or leaf litter, and it does not handle disturbance or chemical treatments well. It also loses out easily to boisterous tankmates at feeding time. Breeding is achievable with patience, though raising the fry is genuinely difficult. This is a rewarding species for a dedicated keeper who can give it the calm, clean environment it requires.
