Cá Ngựa Bắc (Folifer brevifilis) is a large cyprinid native to the river systems of China, Vietnam, Laos, Thailand, and Myanmar, where it inhabits flowing freshwater habitats across a broad swath of mainland Southeast Asia. It is almost never encountered in the ornamental trade, making it a genuine rarity for hobbyists who do come across it. Physically, it can be distinguished from closely related genera by a pointed snout, a downward-facing mouth positioned on the underside of the head, and a distinctive lower lip with a large central lobe that extends to the corners of the mouth. The last simple ray of the dorsal fin is hardened and serrated along its rear edge, an useful identification feature when you can get a close look. Adults grow impressively large, which rules this species out for most home setups. Where space allows, it can be kept alongside other large cyprinids and catfishes that share its preferred water conditions. Despite its listed beginner care level, the sheer adult size means thoughtful planning is essential before acquiring one. Breeding in captivity has not been documented. For most hobbyists, this is more a fish to appreciate in a public aquarium than to keep at home.
