Walker's Killi

Walker's Killi (Fundulopanchax walkeri) is a small but assertive killifish native to the coastal rainforests and forested savannas of Côte d'Ivoire and southwestern Ghana, where it inhabits swamps, pools, and small forest streams. Males are typically more colorful than females, and like many killifish they display a lot of personality packed into a compact frame. One of the more unusual aspects of this species is its apparent ability to function as both an annual and non-annual fish, allowing it to exploit both permanent waterways and temporary pools. A flexibility that explains how it colonizes such a range of habitats across its native range. Unfortunately, several wild populations are now threatened or lost entirely due to rapid habitat loss in Ghana and Côte d'Ivoire, which makes the hobby population worth maintaining carefully. Despite its relatively small size, Walker's Killi is genuinely aggressive and will readily eat fish small enough to swallow, so a species-only setup is the safer route even though it can technically coexist in a community. It leans toward the cooler end of the tropical range, and keeping it too warm noticeably shortens its lifespan. Breeding follows the egg-hanger pattern typical of the genus and is manageable for intermediate keepers willing to put in the conditioning work.
