The galaxy pleco (Leporacanthicus galaxias) is one of those fish that rewards a close look. Its dark body is scattered with pale spots that vary in size and density depending on origin, and the head carries two unusually prominent upper teeth that give rise to its vampire pleco nickname. Those fang-like teeth are thought to help the fish manipulate snails and invertebrates, though their exact function isn't fully understood. In the wild, it ranges across several major South American river systems including the Madeira, Tocantins, Guamá, and upper Orinoco drainages, living in fast-flowing, oxygen-rich water. It's a nocturnal and secretive species, so don't be surprised if you rarely see it during the day. What it lacks in daytime visibility it makes up for in personality. It's assertive toward other bottom-dwellers, particularly any species with a similar spotted appearance. Keeping multiples is possible in a very spacious setup, but territorial disputes over caves and crevices are the norm, so plenty of hiding spots and broken sightlines are essential. It gets along reasonably well with mid- and upper-water tankmates like larger characins or rheophilic cichlids. Worth noting: there are several undescribed variants sold under L-numbers like L007, L240, L241, and L294, which may eventually be recognized as distinct species. When buying, look for a rounded belly and clear, bright eyes.
