Gar Characin

The gar characin (Ctenolucius hujeta) goes by a handful of trade names, rocket gar, hujeta gar, freshwater barracuda, and every one of them hints at the same thing: a long, torpedo-shaped predator built for ambushing prey at the water's surface. Native to the river systems of northern Colombia and northwestern Venezuela, it shares the streamlined silhouette and elongated jaws of a pike, but belongs to its own distinct family, Ctenoluciidae, separate from the better-known Boulengerella pike characins. The body is silvery and tapers sharply toward both ends, with the lower jaw carrying flat, fleshy lobes that set it apart from its relatives at a glance. Despite the predatory build, this species is considerably more community-friendly than you might expect, as long as every tankmate is too large to swallow. Calm substrate feeders like geophagus cichlids, medium-sized catfishes, and larger characins make good companions, while other surface-dwellers tend to cause friction. Juveniles school readily, and even adults do better in groups of four or more. They can be skittish, so avoid sudden movements near the glass. For someone wanting to keep a predatory fish without dedicating a species-only setup, this is genuinely one of the more forgiving options available.
