Parnaíba Eartheater

Found in the Rio Parnaíba drainage of northeastern Brazil, Geophagus parnaibae is a compact eartheater cichlid with a lot going for it. In the wild it occupies two very different environments depending on the season. Fast-flowing sandy-bottomed brooks and small rivers during the rains, then still pools and dry-season ponds when water levels drop. Its coloration includes a distinctive caudal fin patterned with alternating maroon and pale horizontal bands, and a dark lateral spot on the flank. It was circulating in the hobby under the trade name G. sp. 'Parnaíba' from at least 1988, nearly two decades before it received a formal description in 2006. Despite being labeled aggressive and territorial in care sheets, this species is genuinely peaceful outside of spawning activity and won't bother tankmates too large to swallow. The catch is that it needs company. A group of five to eight individuals is the right starting point, since smaller numbers can lead to one fish absorbing all the aggression from dominant tankmates. Like other eartheaters it will sift through substrate constantly, so a soft sandy bottom is a practical necessity. Breeding is achievable in home aquaria and involves biparental mouthbrooding with some fascinating shared care behavior between the adults. It's a solid choice for someone ready to step up from community fish into South American cichlids.
