Club Carnation Coral (Gersemia clavata) is a soft coral native to the cold waters of the Northwest Atlantic, where it forms colonies on rocky substrates in relatively shallow to mid-depth zones. Its common name comes from the club-like shape of its branches, which are topped with polyps that give the colony a feathery, textured appearance when fully extended. Unlike the tropical soft corals most reef keepers are familiar with, this species is adapted to cooler, temperate conditions, which means it turns up more often in cold-water or species-specific biotope displays than in the typical tropical reef tank. That said, it carries a beginner-friendly care rating, suggesting it is reasonably tolerant and not as demanding as many of its relatives. It is considered reef safe, so it can be kept alongside other compatible invertebrates without concern about aggressive chemical or physical interactions. Moderate lighting and moderate flow appear to suit it well, which gives keepers some flexibility in placement within the tank.
