Wood Catfish (Glanidium leopardum) is a small, secretive catfish from the coastal river systems of the Guianas in South America, where it favors shallow, slow-moving creeks with sandy or muddy bottoms blanketed in plant debris and leaf litter. Its common name doesn't quite prepare you for its appearance. This is a boldly patterned fish, covered in dark spots against a lighter body that serve as genuine camouflage among the dappled light and organic clutter of its natural habitat. Unlike some of its relatives in the Auchenipteridae family, this species tends to inhabit the upstream reaches of river systems rather than estuarine zones, and wild captures suggest it leads a largely solitary life. In the aquarium, that translates to a fish that appreciates plenty of cover. Driftwood, leaf litter, and dim lighting will all help it settle in. It's an omnivore and not particularly fussy about food, which works in the keeper's favor, but its intermediate care rating reflects the need to replicate soft, clean, well-oxygenated conditions with appropriate hiding spots. At under four and a half inches fully grown, it fits reasonably well into a dedicated setup without demanding enormous space. Not a community centerpiece, but a genuinely interesting fish for someone who enjoys observing subtler behavior.
