The Golden Zebra Loach (Sinibotia pulchra) is a slender, flexible-bodied loach native to clear, moderately flowing streams and rivers in China and Vietnam. Its most recognizable features are the 9 to 15 dark vertical bars along the body, vermiform brown markings on the sides of the head, and a pair of thin yellow stripes running along the snout and above each eye. Details that distinguish it from the other five members of the Sinibotia genus. It is also traded as the golden Chinese loach or 12-banded Chinese loach, and is frequently imported alongside its close relative S. robusta, often collected from the same wild habitats. In the aquarium it gravitates toward the lower portions of the tank, favoring sheltered spots and quieter areas, especially outside feeding time. That somewhat reclusive nature makes it easy to overlook, but watch it move and the highly sinuous body becomes one of its most engaging qualities. This species is gregarious and forms social hierarchies, so keeping at least four together is genuinely important. Solo or paired specimens can become withdrawn or aggressive toward similar-looking fish, and a dominant individual may suppress weaker tankmates to the point of starvation. A peaceful species overall, it mixes well with mid-water cyprinids and most other loaches of similar size and water requirements. One practical note: like all botiids it carries sharp sub-ocular spines that can snag nets and scratch skin, so handle with care.
