The common sea fan (Gorgonia ventalina) is one of the most recognizable soft corals in the hobby, instantly identifiable by its broad, flat, net-like colony that spreads out in a single plane like a natural lattice. In the wild it grows along shallow reefs and rocky outcroppings throughout the Western Atlantic, from Belize up through Florida and into Canadian waters, typically in very shallow zones where wave action is constant. That natural habitat tells you a lot about what this coral needs in captivity. It is adapted to strong, consistent water movement, and placing it in sluggish flow is one of the fastest ways to run into trouble. The fan orientation in the wild positions the colony perpendicular to prevailing currents, maximizing the filtering efficiency of its tiny polyps as they capture passing particulate matter. In the aquarium it is reef safe and generally peaceful with other inhabitants, though its placement matters. It needs room to spread and good circulation around the entire colony to prevent sediment buildup and tissue recession. Feeding with fine particulate foods is worth incorporating into your routine. This is a coral best suited to hobbyists who already have stable reef systems dialed in and can meet its specific flow demands reliably.
