Found in the river systems of central Thailand, this cyprinid, Gymnostomus siamensis, is a plain silver fish with a relatively deep, broad-headed body and no distinctive markings on the caudal peduncle. Useful features when telling it apart from close relatives. It spends its life moving between river channels and seasonal floodplains, with populations surging into flooded lowlands during the wet season and retreating back to river depths as water levels drop in the cooler months. In the wild it grazes on algae, periphyton, and phytoplankton, typically foraging at mid-water to bottom depths across both large river systems and smaller tributaries. This kind of wide-ranging migratory behavior means it does not adapt well to enclosed impoundments, which is worth keeping in mind even in a home aquarium context. Its taxonomy has been shuffled around considerably over the years, having been placed in genera including Henicorhynchus, Cirrhinus, and Labeo at various points, and some debate about its classification continues. In the aquarium it is rated as a beginner-friendly species and grows to a modest size, making it manageable for a reasonably spacious community setup. It is occasionally seen in the trade, though it lacks the bold patterning of more popular cyprinids from the same region.
