Found only in the Salween river basin of Asia, Hampala salweenensis is one of the lesser-known members of a genus that rarely turns up in the hobby. Most hobbyists who encounter a Hampala are actually looking at the much more widespread H. macrolepidota, so this species is worth a closer look for identification purposes. H. salweenensis carries two rounded, dark blotches on each flank, one sitting above the lateral line beneath the dorsal fin origin, the other crossing the lateral line on the caudal peduncle, along with black marginal bands on both lobes of the tail. This combination of characters separates it from its close relatives, though body markings can fade considerably in large adults across the whole genus. In terms of behavior, this fish is more nuanced than a simple "peaceful community fish" label would suggest. It hunts using suction rather than a direct strike, and while it ignores tankmates it cannot swallow, faster and bolder companions will do better than anything timid or slow-moving. It is a shoaling species that establishes a pecking order within the group, so keeping five or more individuals is genuinely important. Smaller numbers tend to result in one fish bearing the brunt of repeated aggression. Breeding has not been documented in captivity.
