Lizard Loach

A small hillstream loach from Myanmar and Thailand, Homaloptera bilineata lives in fast-flowing, well-oxygenated streams where its whole body plan is shaped by the current. The paired fins splay out horizontally, the belly is flattened, and together these form a powerful suction cup that lets the fish cling to rocks with ease. Rather than swimming freely, it tends to crawl and hop across surfaces. Behavior that earns the whole group the nickname 'lizard loach' among keepers who've watched them up close. Within the genus, H. bilineata has a distinctive marking pattern: instead of the saddle-shaped blotches seen on most relatives, the dark lines running from the snout meet at the dorsal fin as two separate stripes, making identification straightforward once you know what to look for. Fins show a reddish tint in good light. This species is social by nature and does best in groups of six or more, where you'll often see individuals arranging themselves side by side, all facing directly into the flow. Kept in smaller numbers it can be more withdrawn. Tankmates should come from similar fast-water environments. Stream gobies, Garra, hillstream catfishes, and rheophilic barbs all work well. A reliable water flow and smooth substrate to graze are more important than fussy water chemistry, making this an accessible species for keepers ready to meet those environmental needs.
