Found across the Mekong basin, the Malay Peninsula, and Borneo, Homalopteroides tweediei is a small balitorid loach that rarely exceeds an inch and a half. Like its relatives, it has evolved specifically for life in moving water: the paired fins splay out horizontally, the body and head are flattened, and the underside forms a suction cup powerful enough to anchor the fish to smooth rock in a strong current. In practice this means it crawls and hops across surfaces rather than swimming freely through open water, which is part of what earns these fish their informal nickname of gecko or lizard loaches. The color pattern is a warm whitish base broken up by brown crossbars across the back, a lateral stripe running from snout to tail, and dusky banding in the caudal and dorsal fins. It can be confused with the closely related H. smithi, so double-check identification at the point of purchase. In the wild it lives in groups, and that social tendency carries into the aquarium. A group of six or more brings out noticeably bolder, more interesting behavior than keeping just a pair or trio. Tankmates from similar fast-water habitats work best, and because breeding has not been documented in captivity, any spawning would be genuinely exciting territory for the keeper willing to try.
