The suckermouthed catfish (Hypostomus punctatus) is one of the more familiar plecos in the hobby, hailing from the coastal river systems of southeastern Brazil. In the wild it turns up in a range of habitats, from fast-moving currents to seasonally flooded lowlands, which tells you something about its adaptability. Like others in its genus, it can gulp air directly when oxygen levels drop, a neat biological trick that makes it surprisingly resilient. Coloration is typical pleco fare. A brown to grey base covered in darker spots across the body and fins, blending in well against rocky or wood-strewn substrates. In the aquarium it spends most of its time grazing on surfaces, rasping away at algae and biofilm with its specialized mouthparts. That said, it will also go after softer plant tissue and roots, so delicate plantings may not survive its attention. A good-sized tank is genuinely necessary here, as this fish reaches a respectable adult length and needs room to move around comfortably. Provide driftwood, flat rocks, and some shaded hiding spots and it will settle in well. Overall a forgiving choice for newer keepers who can meet its space requirements.
