Suckermouth catfishes (Hypostomus sp. L231) are one of those species that remind you how much is still unknown about South American plecos. This fish carries the L-number designation L231, an informal placeholder that reflects just how little has been confirmed about it scientifically. Its exact origin is thought to be somewhere in the upper Amazon drainage of Peru, but even that detail comes with caveats, since the export history is patchy and unverified. Adding to the mystery, there is ongoing debate among researchers and hobbyists about whether L231 is actually the same fish as another unnamed congener, L266, or a genuinely distinct species. Until proper taxonomic work is done, that question remains open. In terms of size, this is a substantial pleco, growing to nearly a foot in length, so it needs a roomy, well-filtered aquarium and produces a significant bioload. Despite the taxonomic uncertainty, its care requirements fall within familiar pleco territory, making it manageable for a beginner who goes in with realistic expectations about space and filtration demands.
