Lemon Fin Barb
Hypsibarbus vernayi
A large, lemon-finned schooling barb often mislabeled in the trade.

About
Found across the Mekong, Chao Phraya, and Meklong river systems of mainland Southeast Asia, Hypsibarbus vernayi is a robust, deep-bodied barb that reaches close to a foot in length and demands to be kept in a genuinely spacious aquarium. The species is frequently sold under the wrong name. Yellow-finned fish labeled as the lemon fin barb or H. wetmorei in the ornamental trade are often actually this species. The reliable way to tell them apart is fin color: H. vernayi carries yellow pectoral, pelvic, and anal fins, while true H. wetmorei runs orange to red. Like others in the genus, the body scales have dark margins that give the fish a neatly reticulated look, and the fins taper to pleasingly elongated, falcate tips. Behaviorally, this is a schooling fish that genuinely needs companions. Aim for six or more. It is not aggressive in the typical sense, but its size, constant motion, and enthusiastic feeding make it a poor tankmate for anything small enough to be swallowed or timid enough to be stressed by the commotion. Kept with similarly sized, confident fish and given room to move, it settles in well and is considered a forgiving choice for keepers new to large cyprinids. Captive breeding has not been documented.
