The butterfly cichlid (Hypsophrys nicaraguensis) is one of those Central American cichlids that rewards a patient keeper with genuinely interesting behavior. Native to the Atlantic slope drainages of Costa Rica and Nicaragua, including the famous Lake Nicaragua system, this species inhabits slow to moderately flowing lakes and rivers. It comes in several color forms depending on where it was collected, ranging from warm golden tones to patterns of blues and purples, and it can reach a substantial size, so it needs real estate. In the aquarium, it spends most of its time in the middle and lower water column, and it will absolutely rearrange your substrate on a regular basis. Digging is practically a lifestyle for this fish. For a cichlid its size, it sits on the more manageable end of the aggression scale, but it is still territorial and should not be housed with overly combative species. The ideal setup is a bonded male-female pair, and adding some larger dither fish like silver dollars can help defuse tension between the pair themselves. Breeding is achievable and fascinating to observe. Pairs form strong lifetime bonds, divide parental duties clearly, and will defend their territory with real conviction. Juveniles are insectivores, while adults shift toward detritus, seeds, and mollusks, though they adapt readily to varied captive diets.
