King Angelfish

The King Angelfish (Holacanthus passer) is one of the few large marine angels native to the Eastern Pacific, ranging from the Gulf of California all the way down to Peru and out to the Galapagos Islands. Adults are deep blue-black with a single bold white vertical bar mid-body, warm orange coloring on the tail, and orange pectoral fins. A color scheme that's hard to mistake for anything else in its range. In the wild these fish are diurnal grazers, spending their days working through sponges, other sessile invertebrates, and algae, with plankton rounding out the diet. What's interesting is their social structure: pairs are monogamous and home-ranging, meaning they stick together and know their patch of reef without aggressively defending exclusive territory. Females are actually the more territorial of the two. Juveniles have been observed performing cleaning behavior, picking parasites off other fish. A role they transition away from as they grow. In the aquarium, King Angels need serious space given how large they get and how actively they move. Diet variety matters here, with sponge-based angel foods worth including regularly. This isn't a beginner's fish, but for an intermediate keeper with the right setup it's a genuinely rewarding long-term project.
