The Patwa (Krobia guianensis) is a modestly sized cichlid from the coastal river systems of the Guianas, ranging through drainages from the Demerara River in Guyana eastward through Suriname and into the Amapá region of Brazil. It's a riverine species, and that origin in relatively soft, acidic blackwater systems is worth keeping in mind when setting up its home aquarium. Adults typically reach somewhere between three and five inches, making them a manageable size for a dedicated cichlid setup without requiring a truly enormous tank. Like most cichlids in the intermediate care bracket, the Patwa isn't a fish you set up and ignore. It has behavioral complexity and responds to its environment and tankmates in ways that make it genuinely engaging to keep. Being a carnivore, it appreciates meaty foods and should be fed accordingly. With a lifespan pushing eight to ten years under good conditions, this is a real long-term commitment rather than a casual addition. The Patwa isn't commonly encountered in the hobby, which is a shame. Keepers who do find it tend to appreciate its personality and the understated appeal of a well-conditioned specimen from a region that doesn't always get the attention it deserves.
