Found in the shallow, fast-moving rapids of the Rio Xingu basin in Brazil, Ancistomus feldbergae is a medium-sized plecostomus with habits closely tied to its rocky riverbed home. In the wild it spends daylight hours tucked beneath flat rocks ranging from palm-sized to nearly half a meter across, then emerges after dark to graze the biofilm and algae coating those same rock surfaces. Stomach content analysis from wild specimens revealed a diet dominated overwhelmingly by diatoms, with some sponge fragments mixed in, and an intestinal length nearly eleven times the body length underscores just how committed this fish is to processing plant material. In the aquarium, replicating that setup goes a long way toward keeping it comfortable. Think smooth flat rocks, good water movement, and low light or dim areas where it can retreat. Diet-wise, algae wafers, blanched vegetables, and biofilm-rich surfaces will cover most of its needs, though it will pick at meaty foods opportunistically. This isn't the most demanding pleco to keep, but the Xingu's warm, moderately soft water should be respected. It's a rewarding fish for someone who has moved past their first pleco and wants something with genuine personality and interesting natural history behind it.
