The Jelly Bean Tetra (Ladigesia roloffi) is a miniature characin from a narrow range in Sierra Leone, collected from small stream systems draining the Gbangbaia basin and possibly the Du River. It holds the distinction of being the sole representative of its genus, and can be told apart from related alestids by the absence of dorsal scales just forward of the adipose fin. A subtle but reliable field mark. In the aquarium, these are quiet, somewhat timid fish that genuinely benefit from being kept in groups of eight or more; a larger shoal draws them out, encourages bolder behavior, and produces far more interesting interactions than a smaller cluster ever will. Their diminutive size means tankmates need to be chosen carefully. Not because the Jelly Bean Tetra is aggressive, but because it can easily be outcompeted or intimidated by boisterous or larger fish. Other small, softwater-loving species make the best companions. This is probably not the best pick for a first community tank given its preference for soft, acidic conditions and sensitivity to water chemistry fluctuations, but for a keeper who already has some experience dialing in a blackwater or softwater setup, it's a genuinely rewarding species to work with. Breeding is possible but uncommon, and the fry are notoriously delicate in their early weeks.
