A small dwarf cichlid from the Rio Verde and the broader Araguaia basin in central Brazil, Laetacara araguaiae spent years circulating in the hobby under the informal name 'Buckelkopf' before receiving its official scientific description. It is one of seven recognized species in the Laetacara genus, and among the more compact members. Adults typically top out well under two inches, making this one of the smaller cichlids you can keep. Identifying it among its close relatives comes down to fin-ray counts and scale details, but in the aquarium it's more easily recognized as a rounded, peaceful little cichlid with a dark spot at the base of the caudal fin and no corresponding spot at the dorsal-fin base. Despite its cichlid credentials, this species is genuinely approachable for newer fishkeepers. It's not aggressive in the way larger cichlids can be, and it settles comfortably into a well-planted community setup with similarly sized, non-aggressive tankmates. Like other Laetacara, it spawns on flat surfaces and both parents share duties guarding eggs and wriggling fry, which makes for genuinely interesting behavior to observe even in a modest home aquarium.
