The Cowboy Whiptail (Lamontichthys llanero) is one of those loricariids that most hobbyists have never encountered, and that relative obscurity is a shame because it's a genuinely interesting fish. Native to the Orinoco River drainage in South America, specifically the Guanare Viejo River, it inhabits the margins of waterways ranging from narrow channels to broad rivers nearly a kilometer wide, typically over muddy or sandy substrates in turbid water. In the aquarium it carries that same low-key personality you expect from the whiptail group: completely peaceful, unbothered by conspecifics, and easy to keep in groups. That said, it does have specific preferences when it comes to flow and water conditions, so it works better alongside current-loving tankmates like rheophilic cichlids or similarly adapted loricariids rather than in a generic community setup. Peaceful small characins that can handle some water movement are another sensible option. Despite the specialist reputation, the fish itself is rated as manageable for beginner-level keepers who are willing to do their homework on the environment it prefers. Breeding has been documented, the fish will spawn on flat surfaces, occasionally even the aquarium glass, though detailed accounts are scarce. If you come across one, it's worth picking up.
