The jellybean tetra (Lepidarchus adonis) is one of those fish that makes you do a double-take at the store tank. Adults barely reach three-quarters of an inch, and their bodies are so transparent you can watch their organs and skeletal structure through the skin. A visual trick that earns them plenty of attention despite their diminutive size. In the wild they come from small coastal stream systems tucked into the southern regions of Ghana and Côte d'Ivoire, which tells you something important about their water chemistry preferences: soft, acidic conditions are not optional extras but genuine requirements. Getting those parameters dialed in is really the core challenge with this species, which is why they land in the intermediate care bracket rather than the beginner column. Temperament-wise, they are about as easy-going as fish get. A peaceful shoaling species that does best when kept in a group, where they become noticeably more confident and active. A well-planted setup with subdued lighting suits them well, both aesthetically and because it mimics the shaded, leaf-littered streams they call home. If you can provide stable soft water and a species-appropriate group, these tiny characins are a genuinely rewarding project.
