The lipstick leporinus (Leporinus arcus) is a large, elongated characin from the coastal river systems of the Guianas and Venezuela, as well as the upper Amazon basin. It gets its common name from the vivid red-orange coloration around the mouth, which contrasts sharply against the pale body marked with bold dark horizontal stripes. A pattern that makes identification straightforward even at a glance. Like many of its relatives in the family Anostomidae, it sometimes adopts that characteristic head-down swimming posture the group is known for, which can catch new keepers off guard the first time they see it. Leporinus arcus is an omnivore and an active, fast-moving fish that needs plenty of open water to cruise around in, so a spacious tank is a real requirement rather than just a recommendation. Despite its size, it is listed as a beginner-friendly species, which speaks to how adaptable it is to a range of water conditions. That said, its plant-nibbling tendencies are worth keeping in mind if you have a heavily planted setup. Breeding in captivity has not been documented, though wild fish are believed to spawn among dense aquatic vegetation. It does best when given room to behave naturally and companions that can hold their own.
