The Threespot Leporinus (Leporinus friderici) is a sizable characiform from the rivers, floodplains, and ponds of the Amazon basin, Suriname, and as far south as Argentina. It belongs to the family Anostomidae, a group known for a curious head-down swimming posture that has earned members the informal name 'headstanders'. And while not all leporins adopt this angle as dramatically as some relatives, the posture does appear in this species. Three dark lateral spots give it its common name, and the body has the moderately elongate, rounded build typical of the family. In the wild, this fish follows the seasonal pulse of South American river systems: during floods it spreads into inundated forest zones, feeding heavily on fruits, seeds, and termites, which it processes with four robust teeth on each jaw half. In dry season it retreats to deeper river channels. Despite being listed as beginner-appropriate in terms of care flexibility, the sheer adult size means a serious commitment in tank volume. This is not a fish for a casual setup. It is an active, opportunistic omnivore, and any soft-leaved plants in its tank should be considered temporary. Given space and decent water quality, it proves adaptable across a fairly wide range of conditions.
