Found clinging to the rocky beds of fast-moving mountain streams in southern China and Vietnam, Liniparhomaloptera disparis is a small hillstream loach that fits into the broader Gastromyzontidae family alongside better-known genera like Sewellia and Beaufortia. Adults top out somewhere between two and three inches, with the flattened body plan typical of fish adapted to high-flow environments. In the trade it occasionally shows up as bycatch alongside Rhinogobius shipments, or mislabeled under the fictitious name 'Homaloptera hoffmani', so knowing what to look for is worth your time. You can distinguish it from the similar-looking Formosania by its noticeably shorter barbels, and from Vanmanenia by its smaller mouth and an unlobed rostral fold. Despite being listed as beginner-friendly in terms of basic care, this species has a territorial streak, particularly around choice feeding spots, and females tend to be more dominant than males. Keep a group of four or more to see natural social behavior, but choose tankmates carefully. Small, active cyprinids, rheophilic gobies, and similarly sized stream-dwelling catfishes tend to work well. Larger or more aggressive fish are a poor match. One of the genuinely interesting aspects of this species is its documented aquarium breeding, where females take the lead in site selection, excavation, and egg-covering, burying their small orange eggs directly into the substrate.
