Found on tropical reefs in the Western Central Pacific, Lobophytum schoedei is a sessile soft coral native to the waters around New Caledonia. It belongs to a genus commonly called leather corals, a group known for producing fleshy, lobed colonies that anchor firmly to hard substrate and expand their polyps to feed when conditions suit them. Leather corals in this genus tend to be more forgiving than many of their stony coral counterparts, and this species is considered a reasonable choice for reef keepers who are still building their experience with corals. Like other lobophytums, it likely requires moderate water movement to keep its surface clear of sediment and detritus, and steady but not intense lighting to thrive over the long term. As a reef-safe animal it poses no threat to neighboring corals through aggressive stinging or physical overgrowth in the way some soft corals can. Detailed hobbyist records on this specific species are sparse, which means much of what applies here draws on the broader behavior of the Lobophytum genus rather than species-specific observations. If you come across it in the trade, treat it as you would any leather coral and it should settle in without drama.
