About

A patterned spiny eel from the rivers and flooded lowlands of Southeast Asia, Mastacembelus circumcinctus ranges across the Mekong and Chao Phraya drainages, the Malay Peninsula, and Sumatra. Like other mastacembelids, its body is elongated and eel-like, though it is a true bony fish rather than an actual eel. The banded or reticulated patterning along its flanks helps it blend into leaf litter and murky substrate. Exactly the kind of habitat it favors in the wild. This species is deeply nocturnal and a committed burrower, which means new keepers are often convinced something is wrong when the fish simply disappears into the sand for several days running. A soft, fine substrate is not optional here. It is genuinely important for the animal's wellbeing. In the wild it feeds on invertebrates and small fish, and that carnivorous diet carries over into captivity, where meaty foods like worms, shrimp, and similar live or frozen offerings work well. It shows up regularly in the aquarium trade and occasionally in food fish markets across its range. With some patience and the right setup, hiding spots, low light, soft substrate, it is a rewarding and personable fish that becomes increasingly bold over time.
