Fungus coral (Meandrina meandrites) is one of the more recognizable brain corals coming out of the Caribbean, though it goes by several names in the hobby. Maze coral and meandrine brain coral among them. In the wild it grows across a wide range of reef environments, from shallow water down to considerable depths, throughout the Caribbean basin. Its form is submassive to plating, and the surface is defined by long valleys that radiate outward from the original growth point, branching at regular intervals while staying roughly consistent in width. The overall palette is understated, grey to pale tan, so this isn't a coral that will dominate a tank with vivid color, but the topography of the skeleton is genuinely interesting up close. In an aquarium context it's considered intermediate in care, meaning it rewards keepers who have some experience dialing in water quality and stable conditions before adding it. Moderate lighting and moderate flow suit it well, and it is reef safe. If you're putting together a Caribbean biotope or just want a brain coral with authentic Atlantic credentials rather than the more commonly seen Indo-Pacific varieties, Meandrina meandrites is worth seeking out.
