The Mexican Dwarf Crayfish (Cambarellus patzcuarensis) is one of those invertebrates that genuinely surprises people who assume all crayfish are destructive tank bullies. Native to Lake Patzcuaro and surrounding waters in central Mexico, this species stays small enough that it simply cannot do the damage its larger cousins are notorious for. The aquarium hobby most commonly works with the selectively bred orange form, which goes by the nickname CPO. Short for Orange Dwarf Crayfish in the hobby shorthand. That warm orange coloration makes individuals easy to spot as they go about their busy, inquisitive lives exploring every corner of the tank. Unlike larger crayfish species, CPOs are generally safe with small peaceful fish, though they will opportunistically snack on anything they can catch, so very slow or tiny tankmates are best kept elsewhere. They do well with plenty of cover. Caves, driftwood, and leaf litter all get used regularly. Females carry eggs under their tails and will occasionally raise small broods in a well-established aquarium. This is a genuinely forgiving choice for newer keepers curious about freshwater invertebrates, and a rewarding one for experienced hobbyists looking for active, personable bottom-dwellers.
