Microsorum pteropus 'Narrow' is a cultivated variety of the classic Java fern, originating from across Asia and long established as one of the most reliably easy plants in the freshwater hobby. As the name suggests, this variety produces noticeably slimmer leaves than the standard form, and those leaves angle outward from the stem at a less acute angle, giving the plant a somewhat more open, airy silhouette. Leaf length runs roughly 10 to 20 centimeters, with the rhizome reaching 10 to 15 centimeters or more as the plant matures. Like all Java fern varieties, this one should never be buried in substrate. The rhizome needs to stay exposed. Instead, tie or wedge it against driftwood, rocks, or other hardscape, and it will anchor itself in time with its own roots. The narrower leaf shape makes this variety a practical choice for smaller or more densely aquascaped tanks where the broader standard form might feel a bit heavy. It is genuinely forgiving, tolerating a wide range of lighting and water conditions without complaint, which makes it a solid starting point for newcomers to planted tanks. Growth is slow and steady, and the plant rarely causes any trouble once settled.
