The Haitian cichlid (Nandopsis haitiensis) is a substantial, hard-edged fish native to the lakes and streams of Hispaniola, the Caribbean island shared by Haiti and the Dominican Republic. In the wild it tends to live alone or in pairs, occasionally associating with small groups and sharing habitat with livebearers and mullet species. Adults cruise open water but know how to disappear quickly into rock crevices or debris when threatened, while juveniles hang back in vegetation. A behavioral shift you can observe in aquarium settings too. On the dinner menu: algae, aquatic plants, and small snails, making this an omnivore with a surprisingly plant-based side to its diet in nature. In the aquarium, the Haitian cichlid grows into a formidable fish, adults regularly reach well over a foot, and its territorial drive is the first thing any prospective keeper needs to reckon with. This is not a community fish by any stretch. Tankmates need to be chosen with real care, and anything too small or too passive is likely to have a rough time of it. The intermediate care rating reflects less about water chemistry demands and more about managing the personality of a cichlid that genuinely owns its space.
