Found in the shadowy forest swamps and sluggish creek margins of the Approuague River basin in French Guiana, Nannacara aureocephalus is a small cichlid that hugs the shallows where overhanging vegetation blocks most of the light. One of the first things you notice when keeping a pair is just how different the sexes look in terms of size. Females run nearly half the length of males, which makes sexing this species straightforward once you know what to look for. In the wild, these fish occupy very shallow, softly acidic blackwater habitats, and that background shapes their aquarium needs considerably. They do best when the water leans acidic and soft, with tannins and subdued lighting helping them settle in and show their best behavior. A densely planted setup with plenty of hiding spots suits them well, giving females especially a chance to retreat if a male becomes assertive around spawning time. Because of their specific water chemistry preferences and their somewhat assertive cichlid personality during breeding, they sit comfortably in the intermediate care category. Not a beginner fish, but very rewarding for someone who's kept soft-water cichlids before. With a lifespan stretching up to eight years, a bonded pair can become a long-term centerpiece of a dedicated South American biotope.
